A Spindle shaped barrier island, Sriharikotta is situated off the coast of Bay of Bengal, in the state of Andhrapradesh on the South eastern side of India. The island separates Pulicat lake, which is the second largest lagoon in India, from the Bay of Bengal. The lake houses one of the most famous bird sanctuaries in India – Pulicat lake bird sanctuary spread over a total of around 481 sq.km. The bio-diversity attracts thousands of avian species from around the globe during the winter, with the Greater Flamingos being the most famous among the lot. Interestingly, Prof. Satish Dhawan, after whom the Space Centre is named, was a keen ornithologist himself and has acknowledged to have learnt a lot from this fantastic species.
Overview
SDSC, SHAR is a high security area with strict access control measures. The launch team members will be provided with Photo id cards that may be used to enter the facilities required to be used for the launch campaign activities. However the visitors can have guided tours of the facilities. There are a number of other picnic spots also nearby, that can be perfect weekend getaways for the visitors.
Housing and Transportation
The Island has guest houses with all the necessary facilities for the visiting personnel. The transportation within the island will be arranged by the Company, standard charges being applicable.
Viewing the Launch
The island has a state-of-the-art Mission Control Centre from where the Launches are live-telecasted. The visitors can also enjoy a direct view from a viewing gallery on the top floor of the MCC. The Public Relations Department of the SDSC-SHAR takes care of the formalities for the launch visits and the dates of the launch will be released through print and electronic media as and when they are confirmed.
